DAVID PRICE WELSH AMATEUR CHAMPION

 

David Price has won the 2002 Welsh Amateur Championship at Conwy (Caernarvonshire) Golf Club.  Price collected 250 Konica Order of Merit points and has finished 2nd on the Final Konica Order of Merit.  Stuart Manley from Mountain Ash, despite losing to John Jermine in round three won the Konica title for the first time as his closest challenger Nigel Edwards lost in the semi final.

 

Edwards, last year’s winner finishes 3rd place behind David Price.  Both Manley and Price have made great strides forward this season and will be looking forward to impressing at the Home Internationals series at Royal St David’s Golf Club from 11th – 13th September 2002.

EDWARDS CLEAN SWEEP

Nigel Edwards collected 100 Konica points after winning the Tucker Trophy with a 14 under par aggregate of 272 strokes. Edwards won the Golygnos Oak at Newport with rounds of 70 and 69 and then took the Silver Dragon at his home course, Whitchurch with scores of 68 and 65.

David Price and Stuart Manley tied for second place on 8 under par and Lee Harpin from North Wales finished on 286 level par. Edwards has now closed the gap at the top of the Order of Merit to under 120 points with only the Welsh Amateur Championship to play.

The final counting event is the Welsh Amateur Championship that will be played from 31 July to 3 August at Conwy (Caernarvonshire) Golf Club.

 

SMITH WINS AT HARLECH

Alex Smith from Pyle & Kenfig continued the season’s trend by winning his first Konica Order of Merit tournament at Royal St David’s Golf Club, Harlech and collected 150 Konica points in the process.

Tim Dykes from Wrexham had a welcome to return to form after completing his exams at Swansea University and finished in second place one clear of Coed-y-Mwstwr’s Lee Griffiths. Craig Smith from St Mellons was fourth and added another 45 Konica points to his total.

The next event is the WI Tucker Trophy at the Newport and Whitchurch Golf Clubs on 20/21 July 2002.

CARAD FIRST FOR HOLMES

Jonathon Holmes from Southerndown collected his first Konica Order of Merit tournament by two strokes at the Carad Trophy and also gained 100 Konica points to move into 8th place in the current Order of Merit.

Holmes saw off the challenges of Nigel Edwards and Stuart Manley by two and three strokes repectively.

Edwards won the Radyr Salver with a total of 138 strokes and Manley took the Cardiff Feathers also with a total of 138.

The next event is the St David’s Gold Cross at The Royal St David’s Golf Club on 13/14 July 2002.

OAKLEY UP TO 4TH

Duncan Putter winner Neil Oakley from St Mellons has moved into 4th place in the Konica Order of Merit.Oakley gained 100 Konica points by finishing in 8th position in the Welsh Open Stroke Play Championship at Pyle & Kenfig with a total of 293 strokes.

Brian Lee (Newport) and Alex Smith (Pyle & Kenfig) collected 50 points each following their joint 10th place finish.

The next event is the Carad Trophy that is being held at the Radyr and Cardiff Golf Clubs on 6/7 July 2002

 

MANLEY ELEVEN UNDER

Stuart Manley added to his commanding lead in the Konica Order of Merit after finishing joint 7th in the Berkshire Trophy at eleven under par.

Manley scored 32.5 points to increase his lead over defending Konica Champion Nigel Edwards who finished in 17th place alongside Pyle & Kenfig’s Alex Smith on six under par. James Williams also made the cut at the Berkshire finshing the 72 holes on 3 under par.

The next event is the Welsh Open Stroke Play Championship that is being held at The Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club from 21 – 23rd June 2002.

PRICE AND SCOTT SHINE

David Price moved into 3rd place in the Konica Order of Merit after an excellent quarter final place at the British Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl. Also scoring at the the Amateur were Richard Brookman from Creigiau, Nigel Edwards, West Linton’s Gareth Wright and Pyle & Kenfig’s Alex Smith who all reached the last 32.

At the Aberconwy Trophy Richard Scott scored an emphatic six stroke victory over Lee Harpin to collect his first Konica Order of Merit title and in the process 1oo points that have moved him into 5th place on the table.

The next event is the Berkshire Trophy that is being held at The Berkshire Golf Club on 15/16th June 2002.

MANLEY GOES CLEAR

Stuart Manley returned to form with his second place finish at the St Andrews Links Trophy at the weekend.

Manley collected 150 Konica points for his share of second place with Farren Keenan of Royal Mid Surrey.

In a good weekend for Wales, Lee Harpin and Nigel Edwards finished joint 15th and David Price claiming 19th place.

The next event is the Amateur Championship that is being held at Royal Porthcawl from 3rd – 8th June 2002.

EDWARDS CHASING MANLEY

Nigel Edwards reduced Stuart Manley’s lead at the top of the Konica Order of Merit after finishing 3rd in the Brabazon Trophy at Royal Cinque Ports behind South African Charl Swarzl and Ireland’s Colin Moriarty on 1 under par.

Edwards collected 120 Konica points and has reduced Manley’s lead to just 33 points.

Richard Scott from Haverfordwest came through qualifying and finished in 16th place collecting 24 points and moves into 7th place on the Konica list.

The season continues this week with the players travelling to St Andrews for the Links Trophy over the Old and Jubilee courses on 25th and 26th May.

THE WRIGHT STUFF

Gareth Wright who is based a the West Linton Golf Club in Scotland produced a final round 66 at Wrexham to clinch the honours at the Clywd Open and gain 100 Konica Order of Merit Point fishing 5 stroke clear of Craig Smith

St Mellons Craig Smith won the Jubilee Trophy at prestatyn and Wright won the Egerton Bowl at Wrexham.

Wright now moves into second place on the Konica list behind Stuart Manley who finished in a tie for 11th place at the Irish Open Stroke Play at Royal Dublin.

The next event on the Konica Order of Merit is the Brabazon Trophy that is being played at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club from 17-19 May.

PRICE UP TO 4TH

David Price from the Vale of Glamorgan Golf Club moved up to 4th place in the Konica Order of Merit following the Lytham Trophy. In what was a disappointing weekend for Welsh golfers Lee Harpin was the only other Welshman to improve his position with a modest rise to ninth.

Konica Order of Merit leader Stuart Manley missed the cut at Royal Lytham and will be taking next weekend off leaving it to the likes of Price, Wright , Laskey and Harpin to close the gap at the top.

The next events in the Konica Order of Merit are the Irish Open Stroke Play Championship and the Clwyd Open Championship both being played over the 11th & 12th of May

 

MANLEY AT No 1

Stuart Manley added 90 Konica Order of Merit points for his second place finish at the Trubshaw Cup to go top of the table.

Jack Doherty from the Vale of Glamorgan claimed the title ahead of Manley with Whitchurch’s Nigel Edwards finishing in third spot.

At Tenby it was Manley who won the Golden Eagle from Doherty with Richard Scott in third place.

The Carmarthenshire Open was won by Doherty with scores of 72 and 71 with Manley in second and Edwards finishing in third spot.

The Konica table is starting to take shape and the players will now travel to Royal Lytham and St Annes for the Lytham Trophy from 3rd to 5th May.

 

MANLEY AND OAKLEY SEE DOUBLE TOP

Stuart Manley (Mountain Ash) and Neil Oakley (St Mellons) were joint winners of the Duncan Putter over the Easter weekend in favourable conditions at Southerndown.

Manley had forged ahead through three rounds but playing the final hole was two behind Oakley. Manley made his regulation par while Oakley toiled to a double bogey six missing from six feet for the outright win. It was both players first Konica Order of Merit tournament win and they share first and second place points.

Mark Laskey, 17 from Brockett Hall near London came third with Gareth Wright (West Linton) taking 4th place and Craig Smith (St Mellons) finishing in 5th.

The next event is the Trubshaw Cup that takes place on 20th and 21st April at the Tenby and Ashburnham golf courses.
